The Harehope Quarry Project offers environmental education, field studies, rural skills training, community development, and community arts based from a limestone quarry in the North Pennines.
This project produced 2 story walks and a set of resources for schools to use in conjunction with the story trails.
The main story walk is called The Salmon's Return and involves a 40-minute walk from Harehope Quarry along the Bollihope Burn and returns along the River Wear. Situated on this walk is a storytelling seat.
The second story walk is a walk around the outside of Harehope Quarry and up into Harehope Gill. This trail guides the walker on how to produce their own story using the features of the walk as a stimulus. A storytelling seat is also located on this walk.
A set of teachers' resources has been produced to encourage the use of Harehope Quarry and the surrounding area for literacy work. The resources are available on a CD for schools on request.
